DOWNSTREAM | MACHINERY The material was processed in a
Davis-Standard 1.25-inch HPE Horizontal Extruder, which has the torque capacity to handle high-viscosity resins. It is available in sizes from 0.75in (20 mm) to 1.75in (45 mm). From here, the melt passed
through sizing inserts and entered a water-filled, non-con- tact calibration head mounted at the front end of a Conair MedLine MedVac 235 vacuum sizing tank – which supports cleanroom applica- tions and is equipped with auto- matic vacuum control and touchscreen HMI. The vacuum chamber in the MedVac sizing tank
creates a differential in air pressure that exerts slight outward pressure in the extruded tube, stabilising its dimensions. Here, ultrasonic wall- thickness gauges from Zumbach measured the OD and wall thickness of the tube, first as hot extrudate entering the tank and also later as it cooled. This was used to calculate the ID of the tube – the dimension most critical for medical fluid delivery.
Distortion-free cuts In addition, Conair says that its PipeMaster planetary cutters provide continuous, distortion- free cuts in extruded PVC and polyolefin plastic pipe. The products work for pipe diameters from 0.630 to 24.9 in, at line speeds up to 82 feet per minute. The cutters are available in six sizes across the smaller MDT series and larger MTT
series.
All are equipped with a servo-driv- en cutting carriage, whose speed is synchronised with that of the master
extrusion control. A travelling carriage carries an automatic clamping system and a planetary cutting head. As extruded pipe enters the machine, the clamping system locks the cutting head onto the moving pipe. A planetary cutting head rotates a cutting disk rapidly around the pipe to complete the cut. “The MDT and MTT planetary cutters combine rugged reliability, cost-efficiency and well-engi-

New Spiderless Pipe Die
CLICK ON THE COVERS TO VIEW
Guill just launched its Spiderless Pipe Die, a new offering in extrusion. Capable of providing a finished extrusion with OD from 2”-15” and available in 4140 steel or stainless with heat treating, it’s ideal for tube and pipe producers for large diameter capabilities.
With its focus on precision tooling thanks to extensive experience in medical tubing, flow analysis and Guill’s ISO 9001 and AS9100 (Aerospace) quality systems, this new design offers increased material savings.
