Right: Bausano says its new pipe head can speed up the setup of PVC pipe extrusion lines
efficiency – in the face of an increasingly diversified demand and tight delivery times – lies in being able to combine high variety and low production volumes without compromising on quality,” according to Massimiliano Fenili, technical manager at Bausano. The special head has been combined with an MD 92/30 Nextmover extruder without induction, featuring specially designed screws to process different dry blend formulations – from those containing the highest to those containing the
lowest quantities of additives. As well as being compact, the solution reduces the number of heads from two to one, which helps to reduce customer investment and mould setup times. In addition, the modular design of some parts of the head makes cleaning and maintenance easier. In terms of design, Bausano worked within very tight parameters in relation to both compres- sion values and polymer dwell times. Collected information was initially processed using a Brabender plastograph. Starting materials were fed into the chamber, where they were heated and shear stresses were applied between two counter-rotating rotors. During this machining, the design team measured the torque applied to the rotating screws, allowing it to obtain information on the viscosity of the molten material and changes produced by machining, including gelation, branching and degradation.
