Investment moves In January this year, US-based manufacturer of scientific instruments Bruker announced the acquisition of Tornado Spectral Systems, a Canadian company specialising in Raman instru- ments. Tornado offers a High-Throughput Virtual Slit (HTVS) technology and a portfolio of Raman analysers, including the HyperFlux PRO Plus, Process Guardian, and SuperFlux. Tornado analysers are said to allow faster
measurement of dynamic reactions and permit safe operation in hazardous environments. The product line also includes rugged, high-performance Raman probes for immersion, flow cell, non-con- tact, and large-spot measurements. “The acquisi- tion of Tornado process Raman technology and product is a great fit to expand our range of biopharma PAT analysers,” said Dr Andreas Kamlowski, President of Bruker Optics. At the end of last year, Germany-headquartered
third-party testing house TÜV Rheinland complet- ed its US Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC) at Boxborough in Massachusetts and the relocation of its laboratory at Bentonville in Arkansas. The TIC is described as the company’s most extensive product testing and certification lab in the Ameri- cas. Meanwhile, the Bentonville laboratory offers expanded test scope and improved testing technologies. Services now include toy testing, testing for substances of very high concern (SVHC), assessment for compliance with REACH, and other analytical regulatory requirements. TÜV Rheinland has also joined the Texbase
Connect platform, which enables laboratory test data collaboration through a global network of subscribers, and been appointed by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to conduct UKCA certification in accord- ance with the Medical Devices Regulations , put in

place following the UK’s departure from the European Union. “As a result of Brexit, and with the switch from the CE mark to the UK CA mark, Notified Bodies ac- credited within the European Union are no longer empowered to certify medical devices on their compliance with UK regulations,” says Agnieszka Tabanska-Bira from TÜV Rheinland UK. “As a result, EU Notified Bodies wishing to operate within the United Kingdom long term must seek recognition from the competent authority MHRA.” German producer of thermal analysis recorders and instruments, Linseis has opened a new location in India which, according to the company offers state-of-the-art facilities and is part of the company’s strategy to expand its market presence in key regions. “India is an extremely important market for us and we want to ensure that we can provide the best possible support to our local customers,” says Managing Director Dr Vincent Linseis. “With this new office, we are able to provide our products and services even more efficiently and further strengthen our customer relationships.” Finally, Czech compounder Silon has spun off its
Research and Development Centre into a separate company named Silon R&D. It says the decision to establish an independent subsidiary focused solely on research and development is due to growing interest from customers and government organisa- tions on a domestic and European level for support services. The newly independent centre will conduct its
own research and development, including materi- als testing and production of sample materials, as well as advising on testing standards and compli- ance. “The establishment of a separate company will enable us to further deepen our development and research activities with the potential for obtaining public research grants,” says Martin Sedláček, CEO of the R&D Centre.
