TWIN SCREW EXTRUDERS | MACHINERY

in chemical recycling,” says Frank Lechner, General Manager Process Technology and Research & Development at Coperion. “Thanks to the twin screws’ effective operation, plastic energy dissipa- tion takes place in no time, one core advantage for energy efficiency. In chemical recycling, ZSK technology covers a very wide throughput range of 1kg to 20 tonnes per hour, allowing high- capacity product streams to be processed.” In recent years, Japan Steel Works (JSW) says its twin screw extruder development has particularly focused on recycling. The company says it has been collaborating with a number of customers on the development of various chemical recycling tech- nologies. In late 2022 it expanded its Japanese Extrusion Technical Centre at Hiroshima to include a dedicated extrusion line for chemical recycling and it has been progressing development of technolo- gies for removing hydrogen chloride resulting from PVC contamination in mixed plastic waste. The company’s European subsidiary, Japan Steel

Works Europe (JSW Europe), has participated as a technical provider in a project aimed at establishing chemical recycling technologies using twin screw extrusion equipment. It says it has, as a result,

received several inquiries related to recycling via its Extrusion Technical Centre in Düsseldorf in Ger- many and is rapidly upgrading its facilities there. Challenges that affect all types of recycling include the feeding of low-density Post Consumer (PCR) waste materials and various fluffs (film shreds) into the twin screw extruder. JSW says it has developed its own compaction technologies to deal with that.
