come even closer to the metallic appearance of surface coatings. Eckart parent Altana announced in January this
year that it has reached an agreement to acquire Silberline Group, a US-based special effect pigment manufacturer headquartered in Pennsylva- nia (the deal is subject to customary closing conditions). “The local research and production capacities of Silberline and Eckart complement each other perfectly,” says Eckart President Dr Christian Przyby- la. “The merger will enhance our ability to respond flexibly to regional customer needs and further optimise our service quality.” Silberline CEO Gary Karnish says the acquisition
will create new potential for the two companies. “Together, we can more intensively drive the development of sustainable product innovations, benefiting both customers and employees.”
Light and bright The newly introduced Premium Compal K Alumini- um effect pigments from Sun Chemical are claimed to provide a metallic surface effect and to exhibit greater lightness compared to other
aluminium effect products. “These pigments allow greater formulation flexibility to achieve the sparkly, chrome-like finish that is often difficult to attain in plastics applications,” says Dr Breeze Briggs, Technical Industry Manager, Pigments for Plastics. The series of four pigments achieve their bright, metallic effect without carbon black, so maintaining NIR-detectability. “While most of Sun Chemical’s effect pigments do not contain carbon black, it is still used in certain formulations, such as to achieve the metallic grey colour in pearls or to enhance the colour of interference pigments,” says Briggs. Sun Chemical reports that effect pigments are now finding use in post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials. “Adding effect pigments to PCR can both hide imperfections and standardise colour for a PCR with a large colour specification. In this case, a sparkle effect could be used to hide surface defects,” says Briggs. Another identified trend results from the influence of social media in branding and market- ing. “Companies have recognised the need to stand out from competitors not only through packaging, but now also through captivating photography and video content.
