KraussMaffei’s Chopped Fibre Processing (CFP) technology allows compounding of PP with chopped glass fibres that feeds directly into an injection moulding process, without a pelletizing step. The technology allows separate dosing of PP and glass fibres into the system. The CFP screw uses a patented screw geometry designed for this process, said Jörg Stech, CEO of KraussMaffei Technologies.
Direct compounding Direct compounding reduces carbon footprint and also saves material, which reduces cost and can allow a return on investment of less than one year, the company reported. The technology is compat- ible with KraussMaffei machines. At K2025, the company demonstrated production of an integrat- ed tailgate component using the CFP technology on an injection moulding machine. The technology can provide flexibility in production of structural and load-bearing components in automotive, aerospace or technical consumer goods, the company suggested. Innovation Awards in the Aeronautics Parts catego- ry for a carbon-fibre reinforced thermoplastic wing rib, said that it is committed to “upcycling” carbon- fibre reinforced polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) scrap from its composite part production process. The scrap is collected at Daher’s plant, ground, and made into pellets containing 56% CF that can be injection moulded. The company plans to scale-up its process and expects to produce 4-8 tonnes/yr of carbon PPS pellets that it will offer for sale.
