Heavily fibre-filled compounds can be challenging to process, how- ever, especially as the trend continues towards parts with even thinner walls. “Our forte is developing the material to meet the demands of the application, including the required level of conductivity, but then also supporting with computer-aided engineering and then going to our customers with our field technical support engineering team,” said Schaefer. “Design of conductive parts is critical since often the thermo- plastic moulding is replacing a metal part that inherently has much higher conductivity.” He continued: “Then, you have the right com-
pound, the correct design, but you still need to mould defect-free parts. Our FTE colleagues bring injection moulding expertise that enables manufac- turers to process these very thin-walled applica- tions, even at high conductive filler levels.” Schaefer said that in addition to the upsurge in
LCP-related applications, Celanese continues to see steady interest in automotive developments that depend on electrically conductive compounds. He explained that these applications typically are EV battery parts that require conductivity plus strength and durability, and so often are based on one of the company’s engineering thermoplastics, such as Zytel polyamide or Crastin PBT. If, instead, light coloured products are required, Tisan offers products with antistatic and static dissipative resistivity properties. Its PPH MNF UV AN WT (white coloured) or PC/ABS UNR UV NC (naturel colour) products are examples for plastics with antistatic characteristic with resistivity 1010- 1012 ohms/sq. Cortec launched a new antistatic and corrosion- inhibiting film and bag product, co-Corr Film ESD, for the protection of static-sensitive, multi-metal items, such as electronics. The company reported that the film has permanent anti-static properties to immediately reduce or eliminate static buildup as long as the films or bags are in use, independent of the presence of humidity, and is effective for packaging integrated circuits, printed circuit boards, PCB components, telecommunications equipment, or electronic and electrical panels and enclosures. Outside of electronics, the packaging is also used to preserve finely machined metal parts, specialised bearings, medical devices, and optical equipment. The new film is also industrially compostable.
“Certification from TÜV Austria confirms that the entire material, including the specialised VpCI [vapor corrosion inhibitor] corrosion inhibitors and antistat additives, successfully breaks down into water, carbon dioxide, and biomass, and passes eco-toxicity tests. This ensures the resulting com- post is safe for the environment and plant growth. The product holds [the] ‘OK Compost Industrial mark, which confirms the product is suitable for disposal in industrial composting facilities,” said Cortec.
