Wipag opens recycling process tech centre
German compounder and recycler Wipag, part of the Otto Krahn Group, has opened a new technical centre for development of individual plastic recycling service projects at its site at Gardelegen. Polyplastics has developed a proprietary method to capture and evaluate the gases formed during injection moulding as part of a project to optimise the performance of its poly- mer compounds.

Moisture-resistant LFTs from Avient
Avient has launched new PA6 and PA66-based additions to its Complēt line of long fibre-reinforced thermoplastic composites that are claimed to provide enhanced moisture resist- ance and smoother surface aesthetics. The new Complēt grades
are available globally with a range of loading levels of long glass fibre, long carbon fibre and in hybrid combina- tions. Potential applications are said to include metal replacement and light- weighting in parts for the automotive and power
sectors where intermittent exposure to water is encountered, such as high humidity or short-term immersion. The materials can offer a more cost effective alternative to speci- ality PA compounds, according to Avient. �

Decomposition gases can form in considerable volumes during injection moulding, particularly where high temperatures and speeds are involved, and can lead to mould deposits, short shots or gas burn defects. According to Polyplas-
tics, while pellet and mould-based analytical techniques have been used to analyse recovered gases, both methods are deficient in not replicating actual moulding conditions. Its new Gas Investiga- tion Method in Injection Moulding (GIMIM) uses high-accuracy instrumenta- tion to determine the qualitative and quantitative composition of decompo- sition gases in-situ. �

Orion/RISE work on renewable carbon black
Orion is working on renewable routes to carbon black
Carbon black maker Orion Engineered Carbons has joined forces with RISE Research Institute of Sweden in a project to develop and produce renewable carbon black from biomass-derived pyrolysis oil. Orion plans to convert the biomass oil to carbon using its small- scale furnace reactor at Kalscheuren in Germany. It will also seek to scale the process to match market demands. Meanwhile, RISE will employ a pilot-scale reactor at its site at Piteå in Sweden to evaluate the use of electrofuels, such as plasma or hydro- gen from electrolysis, as sustainable heat sources for the process of carbon black production. �
