MARIN awarded € 14m government subsidy for unique TFLab

papers

MARIN offers a wide selection of papers and doctoral theses in the field of hydrodynamics on its website at www.marin.nl.

The most recent publications include:

Effect of Heading Control on LNG Offloading Voogt, A., ISOPE, Osaka, 2009

The partial cavity on a 2D foil revisited Hoekstra, M. and Vaz, G., CAV2009, Ann Arbor, 2009

Reduction of frictional resistance by air bubble lubrication Foeth, E.J., Eggers R., Van der Hout, I. and Quadvlieg, F.H.H.A., SNAME, Providence, 2009

The “Twee Fasen Laboratorium” (TFLab), or “Two Phase” laboratory, will be unique in the world and will give new possibilities to work on improving the safety of the ship- ping and offshore industry. MARIN can also examine ways to improve energy efficiency and to reduce emissions. With this investment grant, MARIN’s main Vacuum Tank will be rebuilt into an entirely new facility. The existing Vacuum Tank already offers the possibility of studying the behaviour of ships and constructions under any vacuum circumstances. Wave-creating devices, wave-dampening and measuring

systems will be added to the new Vacuum Tank. In combination with the graduations in atmospheric pressure, the behaviour of ships in waves can be significantly better simulated. This facility will take MARIN into entirely new research directions in the field of flooding, wave impacts and in improving the efficiency of propulsion and in reducing resistance. One interesting factor is that waves of 21 m in height can be simulated in the new facility. This is twice as high as the simulation possibilities in the current facilities of MARIN. The facility is expected to be completed end-2011.
