o facilitate JIPs relating to floating production and in particular FPSOs, MARIN is a firm supporter of the


FPSO Forum & JIP Week, which is hosted by the members every six months. The 25th FPSO Forum is hosted by GL Noble Denton in Aberdeen, from April 19-23 (www.fpsoforum.com). Report provides an update on the many offshore projects.


TRUST


HAWAII In the first HAWAI JIP we investigated shallow water wave effects and their interaction with moored LNG carriers. This JIP greatly improved insight into the behaviour of (low frequency) shallow water waves and their inter- action with offshore terminals. After a successful first JIP there remained a number of unresolved questions concerning the design of near-shore LNG terminals in shallow water and how to use the new knowledge in actual terminal design. Therefore, the new HAWAII JIP was formed. Contact: Olaf Waals (o.waals@marin.nl)


The Thrust Hydrodynamics JIP (TRUST JIP) aims to increase insight into physical phenomena, quantifying thruster interaction effects and investi- gating possibilities for improvement. TRUST will combine dedicated thruster interaction model tests, full-scale measurements and CFD calculations with existing data. The JIP aims to better understand thruster interaction effects, to develop analysis methods and to apply these tools in the design process and in the analysis of the station- keeping capabilities of DP vessels. ComFLOW-3 Recently, the three-year ComFLOW-3 JIP has started, funded by the Dutch government and the offshore industry. This JIP is the successor of the ComFLOW-2 JIP and aims at further developing and validating the CFD code ComFLOW from the University of Groningen. This code has proven to be very accurate for extreme free-surface flows. The focus of the project is on the development of suitable boundary conditions for short-crested waves and wave-current interaction and on the implementation of local grid refinement to accurately capture small structural details and flows with large gradients. Parallelisation and computational efficiency and coupled dynamics of waves, platform motions and mooring systems, will also be examined. Contact: Tim Bunnik (t.bunnik@marin.nl).
