During drilling of the first exploration well in 2000, the Japanese operator INPEX discovered a large gas accumulation in the Masela block in the Indonesian Arafura Sea. Subsequent drillings in 2002 confirmed that the gas find could warrant commercial develop- ment, including Liquefied Natural Gas possibilities.

INPEX’s eternal fl ame in Indonesian Arafura Sea

Located around 800 km east of Kupang, West Timor, the Masela block is in a water depth ranging from 400 m to 800 m. The gas field was named Abadi, meaning “eternal” in the Indonesian language. MARIN has a wide-ranging role in this interesting project.

Side-by-side mooring test in Offshore Basin (LNG carrier is moored along portside in this test)

INPEX is presently developing a Floating LNG (FLNG) production unit for the Abadi field. The FLNG is positioned over the reservoir and replaces the offshore platform, the pipe- line to shore, the onshore LNG plant and the jetty. The FLNG will have a length of 500 m, a breadth of 82 m and a molded depth of 37.2 m. LNG will be offloaded to a shuttle tanker in a side-by-side mooring arrange- ment and condensate will be offloaded to shuttle tankers in a tandem arrangement. MARIN has been heavily involved in the hydrodynamic and nautical studies, from advanced model tests to Full Mission Bridge

Simulations and long-term downtime anal- ysis using a cluster of 200 office PCs. MARIN has also been authorised to act as INPEX’s representative for the studies at the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), the Indo- nesian governmental institution responsible for numerical studies and at the Indonesian Hydrodynamic Laboratory (IHL), the Indone- sian governmental institution responsible for the model test basin in Surabaya.

With most of the MARIN studies completed and the last IHL survival model tests ongoing, a team of MARIN representatives recently visited Indonesia. The INPEX project manage- ment in Jakarta was very pleased with the fruitful teamwork between the INPEX, MARIN, ITS and IHL hydrodynamic experts. The team effort has shown, already at the pre-FEED stage, that the vision of the eternal flame is indeed feasible.
