characteristics, Solitons and the special procedures involved.

Realistic approach To get the most realistic performance during the training, the actual DP console and software of the Munin were integrated on MARIN’s Bridge Simulator. In cooperation with Kongsberg Maritime AS, the Munin DP control was hooked up to MARIN’s simulators. Before the training began, the system was calibrated and thoroughly tested. The training was eventually carried out as a three-bridge simulation session, in which the Munin, the

offloading tanker and the supporting tug were simulated. Participants were Bluewater’s DP operators, oil company, CACT’s marine supervisors, mooring masters from Shanye Marine and tug masters from Huawei.

Training included offloading operations under various environmental conditions and emergency situations. The participants learnt to exploit the advantages of the DP FPSO. For example, when a Soliton ap- proaches the tandem combination a turn can be executed in order to bring the in- coming current head-on. They learnt how

to execute a coordinated turn and they be- came aware of each other’s capabilities and limitations. Rapid changing environments, blackouts, line breaks etc. were all dealt with accordingly.

The training sessions offered a unique opportunity to discuss the operations with all the players involved. Certainly, bridge simulations proved to be a very effective tool when preparing a team for such a challenging environment. The MARIN team wish Bluewater every success with the FPSO Munin!
