Topsector on the importance of PPP and MARIN’s unique role in the maritime industry

romoting cooperation, in-depth knowledge, unique facilities and having the right people to push


the boundaries are all part of MARIN’s role in the maritime industry, Hans Huis in ‘t Veld, Chairman of Topsector Water & Maritime, emphasises. In a Report interview, Hans also outlines some of the challenges MARIN faces.


Topsector Water & Maritime is a Dutch organisation designed to promote the ‘triple helix’ of public-private partnership, bringing industry, knowledge institutes and the government together. It tackles a broad range of issues concerning everything from delta technology, flood protection, port construction to water technology, drinking water and the offshore industry. MARIN’s President Bas Buchner heads up the Topsector Water Maritime team.


Hans describes Topsector Water & Maritime as a ‘small organisation with a big network’ and explains that its main aim is to have a close connection within the PPP to ensure that innovation can easily find its way into private companies as soon as possible, in turn strengthening the Dutch export position. “For example we all want to see cleaner ships, smart ships and this is one way of working towards this goal.”


For Hans, innovation is absolutely vital if the Dutch maritime industry is going to maintain its competitive edge. “Innovation in my opinion is all about the implementation of creativity. And you need an organisation like MARIN, which has this
