editorial Dear Reader,

6 Building yachts others do not dare to build Feadship’s superyachts are world-renowned and MARIN is often at the start of the

process - when pioneering concepts are turned into reality. Report interviews Ronno Schouten, Head of Design.

10 Free slots available at new Concept Basin In a bold new initiative designed to stimulate Dutch maritime innovation, MARIN has

created a Concept Basin. 11 Hydrodynamic software suites make design concept

evaluation more efficient To support designers and engineers in evaluating design concepts more efficiently, MARIN has developed the hydrodynamic suites QSHIP and QPROP.

12 Significant upgrade of Anti Roll Tank (ART) design

services MARIN has recently invested in new methodologies and modern tools to improve its services related to ART design

14 New propeller optimisation process can analyse

10,000 designs a day! A newly developed propeller optimiser makes it much faster to identify propeller- hull reactions and reach design decisions.

16 Pioneering ‘HUB’ design tested on bridge simulator The HUB simulations proved to be a great way of experiencing and verifying a

completely new design - using and improving it along the way. 17 Proven concepts re-emerge in a new era of ultra

large containerships With the ever-increasing size of container vessels, can propulsion concepts of 10 years ago still be applicable?

18 New Montevideo LNG terminal goes ahead based on

MARIN & ARCADIS’ concept designs and studies A team from MARIN and ARCADIS prepared the preliminary design and evaluated the maritime access of the new terminal.

20 Desktop studies turn new offshore initiatives into

safe and efficient solutions MARIN USA works closely with offshore clients during the concept phase of their projects as ideas are turned into reality.

22 Station keeping performance of arctic drillship

concept under test When Ulstein Sea of Solutions took part in a concept design competition for an arctic drillship, MARIN was asked to investigate the concept variations.

23 Structural response calculations for a new FPSO

concept for SHELL MARIN has taken the first step in creating a hydro-structural coupling using DIFFRAC enabling more complex hull designs to be used in structural analysis.

Bas Buchner President

The same holds for innovation in the maritime world: real innovations are directly coupled to the operational problems people experience. This brings us innovative motion compensation systems to improve operability in waves or new propulsion systems to improve energy efficiency.

The fact that there is a strong link between operation and new innovative concepts brought MARIN to the conclusion that we should be more involved in the whole development chain of ships and offshore struc- tures. Most of our work now is focused on the design and engineering phase. However, in this phase a lot is fixed already. Large modifications are generally not possible anymore. That is why we are steadily trying to move into a broader role: from concept development through to design and engineering process to operation. In Report you will see our first few steps along this path.

This development is why MARIN is transforming its former High Speed Basin into a Concept Basin with a new wave generator, carriage control and model shop. This allows more low cost model tests at an early phase of the development and makes sure the concept is moving in the right direction. To support the Dutch Maritime cluster, we even offer six free basin slots for innovative small and medium sized enterprises to try out their new concept ideas.

This Report is also an invitation: if you want to discuss your new ideas with us, even using a blank sheet of paper, you are very wel- come! We are here to facilitate your innovation. We are here to help you with our experience and knowledge to make your idea work.

Economic recovery starts with innovation. And inno- vation starts with new ideas and new concepts. But innovation also starts with a thorough insight into the problems and challenges of daily life. Although it may not be the popular perception, many inventors were normal people: they simply tried to find solutions for the problems and challenges they encountered.
