New Montevideo LNG terminal goes ahead based on MARIN & ARCADIS’ concept designs and studies

Client awards major tender for the installation and

operation of an LNG terminal following extensive evaluation and analyses by MARIN, including fast-time

manoeuvring and time- domain simulations, as well as a nautical risk assessment.

T

o diversify the national energy mix of Uruguay, Gas Sayago - part of national oil company ANCAP

and the electricity firm UTE - is developing a new LNG terminal near Montevideo in a fast-track procedure. After some initial studies to evaluate concepts and locations, a team from MARIN and ARCADIS was commissioned to prepare the preliminary design and evaluate the maritime access of the new terminal, which should also provide facilities for a permanently moored FSRU.

The proposed site near Punta Sayago, 5 km west of the current port entrance, is in the shallow waters of the Rio de la Plata estuary. To reach this site, LNG carriers will have to use the existing entrance channel to the port and a newly dredged channel connecting the terminal to the existing channel. The length will be around 45 km, depending on the selected route. Due to restrictions on the deepening and widening of the existing channel, maritime access is a critical issue for the viability of the terminal.
