Frontpage photo: Despite all COVID quarantine measures and entry bans, and winter conditions, Hoving Holland has started supervising and installing new phase I-II-III compost equipment at BTW Agro LLC in Belarus. The picture has been taken from the top of the bunkers and gives a view on the pre-wet area and the building where the mixing line is placed. In the foreground, we see the pre-assembled, galvanised and coated topfiller, that will be placed at the top of the bunkers. In the back, there’s the bridge that will move the topfiller between the bunkers.

It is certainly not true, as some say, that all entrepreneurs are the lifeblood of the economy or their community, but in our sector most of them follow their chosen path with immense enthusiasm, resourcefulness, tenacity, flexibility and determination. They continually improve and innovate because they believe in their product, because they have a vision, see opportunities that others don’t, to take the family business to the next level, or simply because circumstances presented them with a chance. This edition also has some examples of that spirit. Many of the consultants we feature in the similarly named series, worked for other people or organisations first and at some point realised how they could do things better, smarter and with less red tape under their own flag.

And many of the entrepreneurs we report on, including the recently departed Henk Banken, literally grew up between the mushroom beds and eventually started their own companies. In a move that was quite unique for the era, he went on to sell his own mushrooms directly and in doing so built up a trading empire. In retrospect it’s always easy to say he made logical and suc- cessful choices at the right time, but if you are facing the choices, the decisions are not always that clear cut. If they were, then everyone would have followed the same path. After all, running a business venture is also, as someone once said; ‘seeing what everybody can see and doing what nobody has done’. Bert Rademakers and Simon Hoenderop, for example, are certainly not alone in their conviction that sustainable materials based on mycelium production could be ‘the next big thing’. There are many (young) entrepreneurs involved in crafting dresses, panels, and packaging from mycelium. But making this kind of production process and material mainstream requires much more than the ideas and fervour that characterise many start-ups. We will only find out later if pursuing their path into this new realm was the right decision, but along with Mycelium Materials Europe, I believe that this is a game changer. With their extensive network, licenses, expertise and experience, all signs point to go and it is inspiring to note that they are not afraid to forge ahead.
