THOUGHTS ▶▶▶ Where do we go from here?
Finding our bearings in these uncertain times – with chaotic market conditions – demands far more than our entrepreneurial compass which has always proved so reliable in the past. This is what the poultry industry feels and that was the message which resonated throughout the presentations given by industry experts during the digital Eurotier trade fair which Poultry World reports on in this issue. As always, different markets develop at different speeds, but some have become more unpre- dictable due to the pandemic. What is interesting to note is that some have a long term vision. One such individual is Leopold Graf von Drechsel, chair of the European Poultry Club and director of Wimex. His conclusions are both encouraging and pessimistic. If you choose to focus on the bright side of things, as our industry tends to do, there are many opportunities. Poultry consumption will grow on a worldwide scale. Even in the European mar- ket, where total population numbers will remain stable, the demand for poultry products will grow steadily. That said, in the long run, the European continent is not all that attractive to invest in. The main culprit here being the uncertainties concerning legislation, animal welfare and environment.
To invest, it is imperative that farmers and integrations are confident that the investment will pay off in the next 25 years. Without this certainty, Von Drechsel recognizes that investors are hesitant to make their next investment in the European poultry production chain. That raises the question: where do we go from here? And more importantly, will we obtain enough certainty to keep on progressing in the all-important areas of better and more sustainable production? Fabian Brockötter, editor Poultry World
