Farmer-friendly retail

To prevent the spread of avian influenza as effectively as possible, Dutch free-range poultry farmers were given mandatory housing orders from as early as October 2020. A measure wel- comed by the industry, as everyone feels the need to keep bird flu at bay to prevent damage on farms and due to export restrictions. However, after 16 weeks everyone is looking forward to seeing the orders lifted. As the influenza threat is receding, on the one hand, and given that after 16 weeks the eggs of housed hens have to be downgraded from free range to aviary, on the other, farmers were wary that an extended housing period would cost them dearly. Dutch retailers, however – as a farmer-friendly gesture – agreed to keep paying a premium. The premium isn’t paid in the export market, unfortunately, which accounts for 75% of the volume.
