ope many thousands of farmers gathered in what were probably the largest protests ever. In Ireland and France farmers rallied against the consequences of the Mercosur trade agreement, in the Netherlands farmers protested against legislation limiting ammonia emissions and the government plan to cut the total livestock sector by half and in Germany ex
that it is becoming almost impossible to be a farmer. Rules and regulations are getting so restrictive that their livelihood is at stake. Agriculture, especially intensive livestock production, is easily traded-off against bi bigger international trade interests on the one hand, and environmental protection goals on the other. No legislator seems to attach value to food and food production anymore. And that is easy to do, because there is always food available on every street corner. However, the farmers’ pro- tests have made it very clear that this is because of their hard work and resilience. If they are deemed obsolete or simply cease farming because it has become impossible to do so, consumers and governments will soon learn the value of food the hard way. As the Roman poet Juvenalis al- ready understood in the first century AD, there are only two things keeping the peace in society: Panem et circenses.
