A picture says more than 1,000 words. This one is a good example, showing many storylines colliding. First of all: Bangkok, Thailand is where the picture was taken, in January 2022. That was just after it was admitted that African Swine Fever (ASF) is present in the country. Many international experts had already deduced that fact, but it took Thai authorities until early January 2022 to confirm it. The epidemic has caused a steep drop in sow numbers in the Thai market (from 1.1 million breeding animals down to 550,000). Hence pork supplies are pre- dicted to be tight for a long time, leading to substantial price hikes. Some markets recorded highs of over 200 baht/kg (€ 5.39/kg). That is also being felt at markets like the one in the pic- ture. Last but not least – pork cuts being dealt with in the open air shows that sometimes, at markets like these, hygienic requirements could do with an upgrade…
