40 ▶ PIG PROGRESS | Volume 37, No. 10, 2021 Webinar on piglets and weaning

The health of piglets and how to get them through weaning without using antibiotics or zinc oxide were the topics of a recent Pig Progress webinar. The we- binar, held on 28 October, is now availa- ble for viewing on demand. Professor Jürgen Zentek (pictured left), attached to the Free University Ber- lin, Germany, set the scene for the web- inar, touching on the imminent ban on therapeutic use of zinc oxide in the pig industry in 2022 in the EU. He said, “Liv- ing without zinc oxide is a new chal- lenge, not only for pigs, but also for pig nutritionists and veterinarians.” He discussed various alternatives that pig professionals could opt for when searching for alternative feed formula- tions. He pointed to gross composition, protein, dietary fibre and zootechnical feed additives being of major interest. The next speaker was Vincent Bégos (right), from CCPA Group in France. He explained that his company has devised

various pillars to support producers to “demedicate with confidence” and ex- plained each of the pillars. He touched on piglet feed formulation, then he zoomed in on feed solutions and thirdly he mentioned zootechnical support. The third speaker was Niels Poulsen (second left), from Phileo by Lesaffre. He zoomed in on the use of yeast solutions. Poulsen discussed Actisaf Sc47 for im- proving the microbial population from the moment of birth to benefit piglet health, growth performance and effi- ciency. He said, “We should focus on re- building a healthy intestine that can give maximum performance in later stages.”

Webinar on zinc oxide alternatives

Zinc oxide and the search for alterna- tives was also the theme of a webinar held a few days later. Organised by Pig Progress’ sister title All About Feed in co- operation with Swiss feed additives company Pancosma, the webinar fur- ther explored the theme in detail. This webinar, held 2 November, is also avail- able to view on-demand. The first speaker was professor emerita Hanne Damgaard Poulsen, Aarhus University, Denmark (pictured in the mid- dle). The topic of her presentation was “Dietary zinc in weanling piglets – physi- ological demand, challenges and solu- tions”. She talked about how the physio- logical zinc demand is high in young fast-growing animals and touched on some stressors to note during the wean- ing period such as nutritional changes, management, environment, feed, etc. – all important aspects to consider. Richard Sygall, DVM (pictured top

right) is Pancosma’s customer technical services director EMEA. He discussed “Synergistic effects of feed additives to support performance of piglets in medi- cal zinc oxide free diets” in a joint pres- entation with his colleague Sebastien Constantin (bottom right), who is the company’s business development man- ager for the Bioactives range. Jointly they looked at (recapping) the effects of zinc oxide and spoke about a strategy to de- velop alternatives for it, targeting multi- ple pathways for a solution, and looked at active molecules chosen and the mode of action. Constantin gave detail about a tri- al around these highlighted topics.
