ugust 2020 hasn’t been the easiest of months for Pig Progress, as the title lost two of its most avid and critical readers. Followers will be familiar with the monthly contributions of British columnist John Gadd, who had been a contributor pretty much ever since the title started in the 1980s. Over the years he undoubtedly became one of the faces of the title. Unfortunately, John passed away in
early August. Good or bad – if John had a comment to make, I would usually hear it, which helped me every month to remain
alert. While nobody else could possibly combine hands-on pig management advice with John’s light-hearted ob- servations, we shall try in due course to find columnists who will dare to step into his big shoes. Closer to home, sadly I also had to say goodbye to my dearest mother, Ria, in early August. She had been diagnosed with incurable cancer over two years ago, but she continued to welcome every new print issue of Pig Progress and even
enjoyed listening to podcasts as well as viewing webinars. As a teacher of English, no doubt she contaminated me with a preference for the English language. What is more, she always keenly read my features and provided me with feedback every month; she was the reader I had to keep in the back of my mind when writing my articles.
