all calculation models with regard to nitrogen emissions have been disallowed by the highest court in the land, with the effect that suddenly no new construction projects can be started because of associated nitrogen emissions. Parliament is looking for a longer-term solution in the livestock industry, as there is broad consensus that this sector is the origin of most nitrogen deposition problems. In an estimate made by Wageningen Universi- ty & Research, the pig industry has been found to be responsible for 20% of the total nitrogen deposition of the livestock industry.

That same university recently also suggested a solution: separating liquid from solid manure, i.e. reducing emissions at source (read more on page 35). In my view, that doesn’t only solve the nitrogen problem – it also creates cleaner air in- side pig housing. I often read technical articles referring to pigs as being like ‘Olympic athletes’ who need to perform fan- tastically. Perhaps healthier air could help them to achieve that as well?

he latest challenge for swine producers in my country (the Netherlands) is ‘nitrogen deposition’. There has already been a long list of substantial societal demands over the past few decades that have had a major impact on pig production and this is probably the next big thing. In short, too much nitrogen in the environment is seen as devastating for biodiversity. Fairly recently,
