NEWS ▶▶▶ On demand: View the Pig Health webinar

Gut health, African Swine Fever and antibiotic reduction were themes dis- cussed at Pig Progress’ most recent we- binar. Focusing on pig health, the webi- nar was broadcasted on May 7, 2018. It is available through the Pig Progress website for viewing on-demand. Dr Arie van Nes, specialist at Utrecht University in swine herd health and ep- idemiology, explained about the way the Dutch dealt with their targets to re- duce antibiotic usage on-farm. Experi- ence in the Netherlands has proven that reduction is feasible, Dr Van Nes said – and he summed up tools which can be used to achieve that. Dr Rafael Durán of Danisco Animal Nutrition zoomed in on the theme

improvement of liveability for grow- finisher pigs. His presentation revolved around Syncra SWI, a new nutritional additive which is a combination prod- uct. On one hand it contains a 3-strain adaptive probiotic that produces endog- enous enzymes, on the other it contains exogenous enzymes, complementary to probiotics. Dr Willie Loeffen touched on the threat posed by African Swine Fever (ASF), gradually moving towards West- ern Europe in wild boar populations. Attached to Wageningen Bioveterinary Research, he is head of the Netherlands’ reference lab for both Classical and African Swine Fever. He explained what farms can do to protect themselves.
