THE BIGGER PICTURE ▶▶▶

A local hero

Zhu Jianqiang is having a snooze while he is being photographed by a group of school- children. The male animal is occupying a royal suite next to the museum in Anren, Sichuan province, China. And that is for a reason, as Zhu Jianqiang is not a normal pig. In May 2018 exactly 10 years ago, a devastating 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck the province. Almost 70,000 people died and at least 4.8 million were left homeless. So no wonder there was this moment of amazement when at day 36 after the earthquake, a live but very thin, one-year- old pig was found beneath the rubble in Pengzhou City. The animal allegedly had managed to stay alive on a diet of water and charcoal, coincidentally buried beside him. Ever since, the animal has been a national icon – Chinese scientists even tried to clone him. The mean- ing of his name? In English it would be ‘Strong Pig’.
