THOUGHTS ▶▶▶ Feed in the spotlight
The global population continues to grow, leading to increasing demand for high-value proteins. Meeting this de- mand within environmental limits is a major challenge. Reducing livestock’s environmental footprint is a topic that is frequently discussed, especially in the dairy sector. It appears that feed can play a major role in reducing emissions. According to Jan Dijkstra, animal feed expert at Wageningen University & Research (WUR), many cat- tle farmers feed too much protein. However, he sees many opportunities for reducing emissions by adopting dif- ferent feeding strategies. In this edition he explains what improvements are needed and the role that the feed companies play in this (see page 20). There’s also room for improvement when it comes to the production effi- ciency of cows. A review on page 23 outlines the importance of the rumen microbiome and how feed addi- tives can increase a ruminant animal’s efficiency. In the meantime, another protein-producing sector is expanding extremely. We’re eating more fish then ever and the fishery/aquaculture sector has expand- ed appreciably in recent decades. Aquafeed suppliers need to improve the quality and efficacy of their feed, while exploring the potential of new proteins and additives. Insects and algae appear to be promising new ingredients that have a positive effect on fish health (see page 6 and 16).
