vest in production and/or growth. Aiming for a strong immune system, during the whole production or breeding period of the animal, is therefore not ideal and simply too costly. Host immunity can be boosted via vaccination, the use of immunotherapeutic such as cytokines or lipoplysaccharides or the use of feed additives such as yeast derivatives or certain products based on algae. But the timing and the duration of when we apply these should be done carefully. It is all about finding the balance and you have to ask yourself: When does the animal needs a spike in the immune response and how intense should it be? Transition cows for example are animals that require high immunity or animals that face stress, due to transport or weaning. In addition, strong immunity is developed by more aspects than only nutrition. Breeding, management and housing conditions all have a role to play.
