PEOPLE ▶▶▶ Nutriad


Animal nutrition company Nutriad appointed Dr Ahmed Elmaazoun as sales manager Middle East. He will be responsible for key account management and support the Nutriad distribution partners in the region.


Royal Agrifirm Group Royal Agrifirm Group appointed Gudo klein Gebbink as managing director Europe, Middle East and Africa for its Nuscience brand per October 2017. Gudo has strong busi- ness and commercial experience in the premix and addi- tives markets worldwide. Gudo previously worked at Car- gill/Provimi, where he worked for the last 18 years.


Leiber Dr Thomas Bissot has been strengthening the Leiber sales team as global key ac- count manager for Pet Food since August 2017. He will focus on the expansion of Leiber yeast products and extracts in the pet food segment around the world.


Arm & Hammer Dr Vivek Berwal has joined the Arm & Hammer sales team as dairy account manager. Up to now Danny Velez has been heading the daily operations being in close contact with customers as well as suppliers.


AMR: How to measure it?


The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the European Centre for Dis- ease Prevention and Control (ECDC) have established a set of indicators to help EU member states assess progress in reducing the use of antimicrobials and combatting resistance. The indica- tors address both the human and ani- mal sectors and they reflect antimicro- bial consumption and antimicrobial resistance in the community, in hospi- tals and in food-producing animals. The indicators are based on data already gathered through existing EU monitor- ing networks. For food-producing animals, indicators for antimicrobial


consumption include:overall sales of veterinary antimicrobials, sales of 3rd and 4th generation cephalosporins, sales of quinolones and sales of poly- myxins. Proposed indicators for AMR in food-producing animals are: full susceptibility to a predefined panel of antimicrobials in E. coli, proportion of samples containing ESBL-/AmpC- pro- ducing E. coli, resistance to 3 or more antimicrobial classes in E. coli and re- sistance to Ciprofloxacin in E. coli. For all sectors, the chosen indicators, which should be reconsidered at least every five years, are expected to be valid tools in monitoring antimicrobial consumption and AMR.


The nutritional profile of maize can be improved. Raising the vitamin E content in maize


A genome study in the US found that maize contains genes that control the vitamin E content in the plant, which can lead to improving the nutritional profile of maize. The research, carried out by Cornell University scientists and colleagues from other institutions, identified 14 genes across the genome of the maize plant that were involved in the synthesis of vitamin E. 6 genes were newly discovered to encode proteins that contribute to a class of antioxidant compounds called


tocochromanols, collectively known as vitamin E. “There has been talk, among breeders working to increase pro-vitamin A in maize, that we could increase vitamin E at the same time,” said Christine Diepenbrock, a graduate student in Gore’s lab, “They are related compounds biochemically, and to- cochromanols are essential for seed viability in that they prevent seed oils from going rancid throughout seed storage, germination and early seedling development.”
