any level of district involvement.” At Durham School Services, routing structures vary as

well. Adam Silbernagel, senior vice president of informa- tion technology, and Dejan Milenkovic, director of routing logistics, explained that in some locations customer school districts provide routes, while in others Durham manages routing through a dedicated local team. Durham owns and operates routing in more than half its locations. The pro- cess generally follows the steps of preparation and timeline planning, student data updates, route updates and valida- tion, and communication of final routing data. “In most cases, routing software integration with the

Student Information Systems of school districts happens via an automated daily student export/import process,” Silbernagel and Milenkovic jointly said via email. “The district generates a student data export from its SIS and places the file in a Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) folder each day. Our routing software then automatically retrieves that file and imports the updated student data. “Next, we generate an automated export from the rout- ing software containing the transportation details and

place it back in the same SFTP folder, which the district then retrieves this file and imports it into their SIS. Both processes are generally scheduled to run overnight,” Silbernagel and Milenkovic continued, adding that the success in routing comes from working hand-in-hand with school district partners “because of the significant role they play in the routing data we utilize and input into the software. Accurate data is the foundation of efficient routing, and so by actively collaborating with our school district partners, we can ensure every detail meets the highest standards.” Marcucci echoed that sentiment. “We’re all in it togeth- er in the end, and it’s all for the students, and that’s what we have to make sure that we never forget,” he said. “We’ll agree to disagree at times, but in the end, we all want what’s best for the students.” ●
