J

ust one day before Halloween, three chil- dren were killed and a fourth was serious- ly injured when they crossed a two-lane state road in rural Rochester, Indiana on their way to their school bus. For the three pupils who were killed, all of whom were siblings—two 6-year-old twin boys and their 9-year-old step-sister—it was just another day of boarding the bus and going to school. Ten, an oncoming Toyota Tacoma pickup

truck violated the extended stop arm status. State troopers and first responders wept at the scene. Te driver of the pickup was subsequently arrested and has been charged with three counts of reckless homicide and one count of disre- garding a stop sign and causing injury. Quite possibly, a digital dashboard could

have indirectly helped prevent the entire disas- ter. Given time and study, dashboard data and indicators could have also identified the stop location as a dangerous, high-risk site.

Advanced technology is monitoring school buses from the moment they roll out of the yard—earlier, even—to report vehicle and driver performance and to provide a safer, trouble-free ride.
