A Holistic Approach to Hiring andWellness

For the best mental and physical health in a chaotic time, student transporters and those aligned to the industry have more resources available to them than ever before. But those can be both good and bad things

Written by Debbie Curtis 30 School Transportation News • FEBRUARY 2023 S

o many problems can arise for student transporters regarding employee health and well-being. Obesity from a sedentary job and/or poor nutrition. Repetitive motion injuries. Stress. Sleeplessness. Addiction to nicotine or

other substances. Our “modern” lifestyle, combined with recent events like the pandemic, supply chain issues, and the uncertain- ty of global political climate combine to make staying mentally and physically healthy even more important. Good health no longer simply means passing a physical exam-

ination. Many institutions, like the University of New Hampshire, offer holistic services. According the institution: “Our bodies and our minds work together to support our overall well-being. Factors like stress, pain, and various lifestyle choices can throw us out of balance. We offer integrative mind-body services to the UNH community, recognizing that when we care for our bodies, we are caring for our minds—and vice versa. These services can increase the ability to cope with stress, manage pain, and rein- force your overall well-being.”
