“The student’s location data needs to be protected and only
shared with those who have a legal need access to that infor- mation,” said Thien. A school district’s IT department should “most definitely”
be involved with school bus data protection as they are the most local department—outside of the school itself—which understands the value of data and uses that data as an arm of business for the organization, said Hays. “The school district’s IT also understands not only the value
of the data, but also how to protect that data at a level that equals the value of said data,” he said. “There is a due care and due diligence requirement to protect the data, which in turn protects the student and the school.” Thien agreed. “It is often said that the school bus is an extension of the
classroom, so if student data privacy is a concern in the class- room, it must be a concern on the school bus,” Thien noted. “Many school district IT departments that Tyler works with are already leading a change in the way student data in the class-
