because the district’s IT department takes care of it. Richard Jimenez, director of transportation at Placentia-Yorba Linda

Unified School District in Southern California, noted that while “data privacy is at the bottom of the priority list with all of the day-to-day issues we face,” he places data privacy concerns in the hands of the district’s IT department. “Especially since that is not my area of exper- tise. We will let the context experts handle that,” he said. Alfred A. Karam, director of transportation for Shenendehowa Central Schools in Clifton Park, New York, said he is not concerned about the privacy of his district’s school bus and ridership data because the district has a robust IT team. “Our systems are guarded by a couple of firewalls,” he explained. “Our IT team has built redundancies within the system so that should an attack occur, we can still operate on a redundant system.” The IT team is engaged with all stakeholders at every level within the district, he added. “They produce training materials and conduct fake phishing tests so

that staff is not lulled into mediocrity as it pertains to cybersecurity,” Karam said. He noted that data security must be a high priority for everyone. “Having an IT team that is highly trained, highly supported by the administration, and highly focused on the mission is critical to suc- cess and the denial of unauthorized access to our data infrastructure,” he said, adding he has a high level of confidence in his district’s IT team and system. ●
