MEET THE Kim Blackman

EXPER T S

“I would suggest they ask themselves - Will I react to this artwork in ten years with the same enthusiasm and love that I do today?”

Tell us a little bit about yourself what you do and how you got started in the art business?

I owned art galleries in Miami, Florida before moving to LA. I sold those and was looking for an on-going career in the art industry. I started representing artists and placing their work in galleries all around the US. I was quite fortunate to not only have financial success in this endeavor, but also to meet wonderful artists, gallery owners and consultants. While always looking for new artists to work with, I came across a couple of folks that were creating a new, updated collection of hand painted crystal which was based upon a 200 hundred year old Chinese fine art form. I suggested to them that I represent them into the American art community. After two years, I had doubled their business, having introduced this art form to galleries from Hawaii to New York. Personal developments interfered with their continuation of their business and they offered me an opportunity to keep and grow their creation. I agreed and Jacarte was formed.

What art do you represent and what makes it special?

I am President of Jacarte. In business now for 10+ years, we create the fine inside painted crystal. Our clients have included, or currently include, The British Museum, The Huntington Library, Disney Fine Art, Mandarin Oriental Hotels, and many other fa- mous institutions and galleries that will accept nothing but the best.

Our art form is special and represented in museums through- out the world. Why? It is nothing short of remarkable. Indeed,

EXCLUSIVE COLLECTIONS GALLERIES EXCLUSIVE COLLECTIONS GALLERIES

if there is a singular adjective that is repeated by collectors and casual viewers alike, it would be...”unbelievable”. How is it hu- manly possible to paint inside a vase, upside down and in reverse, with such a small brush? Who could have the skill or patience?

What should a new collector look for when thinking about buying art?

I would suggest they ask themselves these questions: Will I react to this artwork in 10 years with the same enthusiasm and love that I do today? Does it “speak” to me? Finally, will it, in the future “Light Up My Life” with every viewing?

How do you think a Collector should choose a gallery to collect from?

Reputation is the most important consideration. Most people are not sufficiently knowledgeable in the art world to evaluate a work of art (other than to know whether they initially like it.) So the durability of a gallery can help insure the durability of the purchase.

Do you have a favorite story about being a art dealer?

I simply respond to this question by noting the hundreds, maybe thousands of folks that have expressed joy for artworks that have I have touched, literally or figuratively, through the years.

What is your favorite part of being a fine art professional?

The satisfaction of being a part of the creative, educative, and selling processes of fine art.
