MEET THE

EXPER T S

Tell us about yourself, what you do and how you got started in the art business? I graduated from UCSB, worked in radio marketing for a number of years and though it was fun, I wanted to be in an industry I felt passionate about so I decided to start work- ing in a gallery. Luckily, there was an oppor- tunity with a growing company in Las Vegas, owned by a woman of vision, who hired me. In 1998 I began working helping collec- tors find their passion among the beautiful paintings and bronze sculptures that filled the showroom. Sixteen years later, I was still loving the art business having helped the company open and design new gallery locations from Vegas to Hawaii. I was of- fered the chance to launch a new project representing and managing talented artists. I left an enviable director position and found myself in the fortunate place I am now…still working with amazing people in an ever wider circle of talent. Most importantly, I use my experience to introduce a select group of incredible artists to the opportunities of gal- lery distribution and representation. These artists have unique abilities and talents that need to be shared.

Why do you feel art is important? Art is important for many reasons includ- ing enjoyment and beauty, but to me, the most important aspect of art for humanity is the bond it can create between people. A painting or sculpture has the ability to attract individuals who perhaps woundn’t know they share common ground. Such af- finity can be in the appreciation of artwork’s sheer beauty, a message conveyed which resonates with both parties.

Do you collect and what do you enjoy? The answer is an emphatic Yes! I go on vacation and find myself in a gallery col- lecting art!

EXCLUSIVE COLLECTIONS GALLERIES

Robin Riley

What should a new collector look for when thinking about buying art? Passion and price are two of the most im- portant considerations when choosing your art. It needs to be a work of art that you are spontaneously drawn to on an emotional level. The attraction could be for beauty conveyed or awe of technique. Perhaps the art reminds you of a special person or place; perhaps it simply makes you smile. What- ever feeling the artwork elicits, it is that con- nection that is key. Follow your heart when it comes to choosing art. I truly believe that if you consistently collect art that appeals to you on a deep level, it ultimately will fit your style. As time goes on and you walk through the spaces of your home, there will be an underlying connection others can see and you will forever enjoy.

Also important, though not as exciting to consider, is the price. Know that it is almost an inescapable truth, that the work of art you fall in love with will be a bit more than you wanted to spend. And that’s okay, splurge a bit within reason. This is a purchase that you will enjoy for the rest of your life and even pass through family generations. Start with artwork that is priced comfortably within your budget.

How do you think Collector should choose a gallery to collect from? Enough cannot be said about the impor- tance of the quality of the gallery. The gal- lery you collect from needs to be a trusted partner for fair pricing and accurate infor- mation. The individuals who work in the gal- lery should to be able to explain each artist to your satisfaction. Make sure the gallery is established and has a good reputation. A strong gallery relationship will make your collecting more enjoyable and valuable.

What is your favorite part of being a fine art professional?

My favorite part of being in the art busi- ness is being surrounded by creativity and the talent. Whether the artists are introducing new styles or perfecting proven techniques, the art world is always fresh, energetic, filled with vision and passion. I so admire the drive and self-reflection required to become an accepted artist. The hours each artist has spent alone in a studio, working tirelessly, is daunting to consider. I am driven to share their incredible talents and potential with collectors and fellow appreciators. I am so thankful that I have had the opportunity over the years to glimpse into this world.
