lack Friday traditionally kicks off the holiday shopping sea- son in America, but perhaps it has also come to represent the

commercialization and

anxiety of what is supposed to be a joy- ous time. Fortunately, a delightful show- ing of art by a legendary creative genius will coincide with this year’s holiday kick- off. Maybe it will also shed some needed perspective on the season as well.

erly Hills is showcasing The Art of Dr. Seuss Collection, featuring “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, with a celebra- tory opening on Black Friday. This year the black in Black Friday might come to symbolize the dark heart of the Grinch in the story and artwork of Theodor Seuss Geisel, known to his millions of fans as Dr. Seuss. At 53 years of age, Geisel had a strong

case of the grumps the day after Christ- mas and he didn’t like the way it felt. He was feeling the consequence

of the wear and tear from that year’s Christmas rush. “Something had gone awfully wrong with Christmas or maybe with me,” he said. As a result, Geisel went to work on this famed story with the purpose of creating a fable that would of fer a proper frame of reference and commentary on the holidays. The out- come, of course, was “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” The green Grinch is annoyed by the Christmas celebrations in Whoville below his cave, so he is de- termined to ruin the festivities by steal- ing the holiday-themed items from the village. The unforget table tale features such

characters as the cold-hear ted Grinch, the loyal but downtrodden dog Max and the innocent Cindy Lou Who. The ar twork displayed in the Exclusive Col- lections show will contain the fabulous- ly zany and peculiar wonderment that is famously Dr. Seuss ar t. The works are limited editions adapt-

ed from the original painting, sculpture and drawings by Geisel. In addition, a selection of bronze sculptures from the Tribute Collection created by Leo Rijn will also be featured. One such sculpture is a depiction of the Grinch with the faithful Max.
