Open Letter to the Ontario Government: Ontario’s current Full-Day Kindergarten model is working well Since 2010, the Ontario government has made the best investment possible for our earliest learners.
The current model for Ontario’s Full-Day Kindergarten (FDK) program, with both a teacher and an early childhood educator in the classroom, provides lasting benefits for children’s reading, writing, numeracy, self-regulation and social skills. The specialized knowledge and skills that the teacher and early childhood educator each bring to the classroom ensure that children’s academic and socio-emotional skills are fostered with support and guidance to best nurture their development and growth.
It’s the kind of start that has been shown to lead to later educational and economic success, higher graduation rates and better social adjustment into adulthood.
Full-Day Kindergarten is universally accessible and makes good economic sense. Multiple studies have shown that there is a significant social and economic benefit from this investment in our early learners.
Ontario’s play-based learning model was created by experts based on extensive research of successful early learning programs around the world. Maintaining the current FDK model, including the educator team, class size caps and play-based learning foundation, is critical to ensuring that Ontario’s youngest students get their very best start.
We urge Ontario to continue to invest in our children. Don’t make them pay for government cuts. Signatories:
