YOUR FEDER A TION: 2019 ANNUAL MEETING
PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS P
resident Sam Hammond welcomed 660 delegates from across the province to ETFO’s 21st annual meeting. “Over
the past year, we have faced deep cuts, chaos and uncertainty. But we have met these chal- lenges head on and fought back. Our resolve as a collective reached every corner of this province,” he said. He told delegates that we have wasted no time in organizing and mo- bilizing ETFO members and the public. “The unwavering solidarity of our members has allowed us to fight back against this govern- ment’s attempts to undermine public educa- tion and other vital public services. Just over a year ago, it became very clear that the Ford Conservative government had no intention of governing “for the people.” Over the past year, we have seen that the priority of this government is reducing the deficit at all costs, no matter what they have to do or who they have to push aside. We must continue to be vigilant, we must continue to defend what we value in public education. ETFO is prepared to stand up against this government and do everything we have to defend our rights and our well-being in this province. We must continue to strengthen our connections and to mobilize our members and our commu-
nities,” he continued. “It has been amazing to see so many members wearing Red for Ed on Fridays and Cuts Hurt Kids buttons. Taking these actions alongside other education union members, parents and guardians has been in- credible. We gave notice to bargain on June 3, 2019. But well before June, we were preparing
for central and local bargaining. We will con- tinue to insist that the government act for the well-being of the public education system. We must continue to organize, we must continue to mobilize, and to make sure every single day we hold Ford and this government account- able for their irresponsible actions and cuts.”
