MADRID

Frieze Art Fair Director Victoria Siddall on chocolaterías, fino bars and espadrilles – some of the things that keep her returning to Madrid

Why Madrid?

For me the best things about Madrid are the things that have been there forever: an old fino bar or a fantastic restaurant. To me, it’s not a city that’s trying to change itself all the time but one that has the kind of treasures that reveal more of themselves the more you go back. You do see different sides to a city when you revisit even though you may be walking the same streets. For me, getting the best out of Madrid, or any city is about getting to know a place very well, something you rarely get the chance to do.

My Madrid San Ginés: Churros and hot chocolate Elvira Gonzales: Local gallery

One of my reasons to visit a city is to see the local galleries because it gives you another perspective on a place to see the work of artists based there. The great contemporary art galleries in Madrid include Juana de Aizpuru, Elvira Gonzales, Travesia Cuatro, Maisterravalbuena, Parra & Romero and Elba Benítez. Caylus is the gallery

4 COMPANION

I never usually eat churros and hot chocolate for breakfast. However, when I’m in Madrid it just feels like the thing to do. There’s a place called Chocolatería San Ginés where they serve delicious, extra long churros with hot chocolate. If you’re going to spend the day walking around the city you can justify it!

Get lost and explore

Buen Ritero Park (commonly known as el Ritero) is a beautiful green space in the centre of the city. I love walking through the gardens and sitting on the grass and contemplating the city. It’s somewhere I like to go on a Sunday and it helps that it’s usually sunny.

for Spanish old master paintings. I also visit the Prado on every trip.

Lazy breakfast Buen Ritero Park: For a sunny stroll Long lunch

For lunch I always go to Casa Paco. It’s one of those places that hasn’t changed for a long time and I hope it never will. It’s an incredibly classic place with tiled walls and serves sizzling hunks of steak called Cebon de Buey. They have this special way of cooking it where they bake it in the oven then deep- fry it. It’s very unorthodox but totally delicious. There is also a great fish and seafood restaurant called La Trainera. It’s always worth asking if they have Caribineros which are somewhere between giant, bright red prawns and lobster. You don’t see them very often and they are extremely good.
