PERFECT COMPANIONS

In association with

Our insiders pick who they’d take on a tour of their chosen cities

Fine artist Carlo Benvenuto Chosen by Massimo Bottura

One of my oldest friends is the artist Carlo Benvenuto. We’ve been friends since we met in 1997 when a high school friend was running a pop-up gallery in Venice and exhibiting

Carlo’s work. Every time I’m in Milan to check out the restaurant scene, or for an expo, or to visit an art gallery, I always hook up with Carlo. So he’s my choice. My wife Lara calls us partners in crime and I use any visit as an opportunity to talk and walk with him. Carlo tends to meet me at the train station and we walk into town, passing and commenting on the Gio Ponti buildings. We share a love of this great Italian architect and designer. Ponti built the Pirelli Tower in 1956 and besides it being an elegant building, it served as the model, some say, for the Pan Am building (now Met Life) in New York. It’s an icon of Milanese architecture. In nearby Piazza Caiazzo, Ponti designed Montedoria, his final project in Milan. It’s covered in these three-dimensional bright green tiles that play with the light and reflections. We talk about it endlessly!

Fine artist Cecily Brown Chosen by Victoria Siddall

Ideally I’d love to walk around the Prado with an artist, and I think it would be Cecily Brown. She held a fascinating talk on the paintings at Frieze Masters a few years back so I think I would find it really interesting to hear Cecily’s perspective on the historical paintings in the museum. Alternatively I would love to visit the city with Pedro Almodóvar and see Madrid through his eyes, exploring the places that fascinate him. For me, he really brings Spain alive in his films and I would love to witness the beginnings of how he does that.
