PERFECT COMPANIONS
In association with
Architect Rem Koolhaas
Chosen by Anne Riis
I would like to take Rem Koolhaas, the architect, urbanist and city planner. He would be really interesting - especially for visiting Copenhagen
Fashion show designer Alexandre de Betak
Chosen by William Norwich
Alexandre de Betak, the founder of Bureau Betak, is an environmental designer and special events impresario whose work ranges from Dior shows in
Paris to Victoria’s Secret presentations in the US. He is always on the lookout for new venues to house his fashion shows, and although he knows New York well, I don’t know how often he gets above 14th Street and the hip environs of the East and West Villages. For busy world travellers like Alex, a stroll up Madison Avenue above 72nd Street - home for many families, schools, cultural institutions and places of worship - might allow him to not only enjoy the respite, but perhaps find a space that interests him for one of his amazing events.

harbour. It’s such a diverse area now. There are big architectural contradictions between the very new buildings and the traditional old buildings. I think it would be really fascinating to walk around with someone like that and hear their point of view on a part of Copenhagen that’s about to change from a former industrial area into an exciting new residential one, and what effect this will have on the city.
Photographer Hans Eijkelboom
A perfect

companion around Amsterdam for me would be the Dutch photographer Hans Eijkelboom. He’s a friend of mine and takes pictures of people
walking through cities around the world wearing similar clothing or expressing similar kinds of behaviour. He’s made quite a name for himself and I think he has a perfect eye for what’s happening in Amsterdam. You can find some great examples of this in his book People of The Twenty-First Century. I would love to walk the canals with him and observe how his gaze settles on certain people and ask him more about why it does and what sparks his interest.
Kevin Davies’ Perfect Companion Ed Ehlich
Whenever I go to New York I call my friend Ed Ehlich. We met on my very first trip to New York when I was just out of art school. I had arranged to photograph a band but lost my bearings on
the way to meet them so I popped into a friend’s vintage shop for directions. Ed happened to be there and offered to show me the way. He was a keen amateur photographer who liked vintage clothing so we hit it off and became lifelong friends. Every time I visited he would show me the old city, or an old bar that was full of character and characters. He showed me the New York I might never have experienced if I hadn’t bumped into him by accident.
