tihad Cargo’s cool-chain operation in Abu Dhabi has been engineered to function as far more than a temperature- controlled airfreight service. Instead, it operates as an embedded layer of critical infrastructure within a wider, government-backed life sciences and healthcare ecosystem —
one designed to remove risk, ensure consistency , and support long-term growth in pharmaceutical logistics. “When it comes to life sciences and healthcare, Abu Dhabi has invested
in building a fully integrated ecosystem,” says Fabrice Panza, Manager, Global Cool Chain Solutions at Etihad Cargo. “This ecosystem covers the entire supply chain, from research and development to manufacturing and distribution.” Rather than approaching pharma as a niche cargo vertical, Etihad Cargo
has aligned its Life Sciences and Healthcare offering with Abu Dhabi’s broader healthcare strategy under the supervision of the Department of Health. The ecosystem brings together regulators, manufacturers, logistics providers , and academic institutions, creating an environment in which logistics is treated as a strategic enabler rather than a downstream function. This ecosystem-first mindset is reflected in how pharma shipments
physically move through the airport. All life sciences cargo handled in Abu Dhabi is routed through a dedicated pharma corridor, linking the passenger terminal directly to the pharma hub via a controlled tunnel environment. Shipments are handled exclusively using permanently assigned cool dollies and supported by pre-cooled thermal covers as part of a defined contingency framework. “What makes this proposition unique is the way every element is
connected,” Panza explains. “Infrastructure, regulation , and operations are designed together, not in isolation. That integration is what allows us to remove risk rather than simply manage it.”
Designing out risk through infrastructure and process For Etihad Cargo, the most significant threats to pharmaceutical integrity occur on the ground, not in the air. Temperature excursions, exposure to ambient conditions , and uncontrolled dwell times are where risk accumulates, particularly during handovers between stakeholders. By redesigning those touchpoints, the carrier has focused on eliminating variability at the most vulnerable stages of the journey. “When it comes to life sciences and healthcare, Abu Dhabi has invested

Our role as Etihad Cargo is to be fully embedded in that environment.” The physical architecture of the operation is deliberately layered. The
tunnel transfer protects shipments from external conditions, while the permanent use of cool dollies ensures continuous temperature control
during ground movements. These measures are reinforced by process discipline and contingency planning, creating what Etihad Cargo describes as a steady, predictable handling environment for sensitive cargo. “What is really at stake in pharma logistics is not only safety, but
stability,” Panza explains. “You need to provide the same environment every single time, without exception. That stability is what protects the product and builds trust with our customers.” This approach has delivered measurable performance outcomes.
Etihad Cargo reports a 99.7 percent pharma life compliance rate in Abu Dhabi, a figure that reflects not a single innovation but the cumulative effect of infrastructure, process , and oversight working together. The carrier is careful to position this level of compliance not as a marketing differentiator, but as the expected outcome of operating within a fully aligned ecosystem. “Compliance is not something you add at the end of the process,”
Panza says. “It has to be built into the system from the beginning. When
infrastructure, performance follows.”
Validation through partnership and ecosystem credibility The maturity of Abu Dhabi’s life sciences ecosystem has also played a decisive role in attracting global pharmaceutical companies to establish a presence in the emirate. GSK’s decision to locate a distribution hub in Abu Dhabi is frequently cited as a signal of confidence in the environment’s ability to support complex, high-value pharma supply chains at scale. For Etihad Cargo, such partnerships are less about airline preference
and more about ecosystem credibility. Global pharma companies evaluate hubs holistically, assessing regulatory oversight,
logistics
reliability, partner capability , and long-term stability as a single proposition rather than isolated components. “The GSK collaboration is extremely important because it showcases
what the ecosystem is capable of,” Panza says. “A big pharma company will only establish a hub where the full supply chain is compliant and reliable. That decision validates the environment as a whole, not just one service provider.” Central to that credibility is Etihad Cargo’s collaborative operating model.
The carrier openly rejects the notion that any single player can secure the pharmaceutical supply chain alone. Instead, its Life Sciences and Healthcare offering is built around coordinated partnerships with specialist container providers, ground handling agents , and logistics technology companies, all operating within shared quality and process standards. “You cannot achieve anything alone in pharma logistics,” Panza
concludes. “Your supply chain is only as strong as its weakest point, and that is a reality we take very seriously. Collaboration is not optional for us — it is the foundation of everything we do.”
