IN ACTION Out and About How the RYA represents your interests on the water

Flotilla for our waterways F

Palace of Westminster. Fund Britain’s Waterways is a coalition of organisations,

including the RYA, representing the users and supporters of inland waterways. Mel Hide, RYA Director of External Affairs, said, ‘We know that our waterways are under threat without the adequate investment needed for failing infrastructure and to safeguard their future. The inevitable decline in the condition of the network could mean a substantial risk to the freedom of navigation and the vital blue spaces and their  of people.’ waterways.org.uk/waterways/ sites/fund-britains-waterways

Fixing the leaks

The Independent Water Commission has invited boat users and the public for their views on  broken water sector. Members of the Clean

Water Sports Alliance, including the RYA’s Phil Horton, met with the commission to ask government regulators to do more to protect public health. They also discussed issues of water quality reporting and access. The commission is taking evidence from a

wide range of groups and will publish recommendations for a reformed water sector in June.

Harbour Master matters R

epresenting the RYA, Mel Hide, Director of External Affairs,

attended the UK Harbour Masters’ Spring 2025 Conference held in Edinburgh in April. The latest marine sector news was discussed, such as safety regulations and best practice operations, from pilotage to people skills, inclusive cultures and effective engagement. Understanding the different types and sizes of harbours and

the challenges faced by the harbour masters is invaluable. It enables the RYA to build informed views on controversial subjects including alcohol and boating or compulsory boat registration, ensuring our voice is trusted as we protect the public right to navigate and access blue spaces responsibly.
