Motive Force – Sail Common sailing rigs Mainsail Genoa
Sloop
The simplest, most common yacht rig. It has one mast. The forestay originates either at the masthead in a masthead sloop, or lower down if it is a fractional rig.
Jib Mainsail Cutter
One mast, two forestays. Modern yachts generally take one of these to the masthead and the second well below it. Cutters may rig short bowsprits. Not to be confused with sloops that opt to carry a choice of roller headsails on two adjacent forestays.
