People’s relationship with the sea is encompassed by the lad dreaming of far horizons and of what he may one day become – an old sailor, his hands toughened by salt water, contemplating the lessons it has taught him. Most of us are placed somewhere between. From the total seaman we learn that the oceans are not for conquering, but for working with in respectful compromise. The boy reminds us that the technology of boating, from tarred rope-yarn to navigation computer, is no more than a means to an end. The inescapable lure of the sea remains the vision of our youth.
