PASSAGE MAKING Use Chart 3 and 4. Use variation 6°W
You plan to do a daylight passage from Endal Marina, towards North Namley Yacht Haven in Namley Harbour for Tuesday, 13th August. The boat has an average cruising speed of 4–5 kts, and a draught of 1.6m. The crew will be two adults, and two children, who have all sailed the boat before. The forecast is for a light to moderate easterly wind, with good visibility.
1. a) What is the approximate length of the passage? b) Endal Marina is a secondary port on Port Fraser. What does this mean? c) The local tide table gives: HW Endal 1523 DST 4.6m LW 0.9m Is it possible to leave Endal Marina at any time? d) When does the tidal stream become favourable? e) When is it possible to enter Namley Harbour and proceed to North Namley Yacht Haven? f) Are there any special regulations within Namley Harbour? g) You need to fill the water tank, and get diesel. Which marina will you use? h) Is this a suitable passage for the boat and crew? i) Are there any hazards to monitor during the passage?
2. When will you leave? Give reasons.
3. The departure waypoint is placed where the leading line crosses the 20m contour line. Should the navigator expect the depth of water to be 20m? Explain your answer.
4. Plan a route from WPT 1 to the Split south cardinal buoy in Namely Harbour. Select waypoints that can be verified.
a) Plot the waypoints on the chart and list the direction and distance from each to the next. b) Give reasons for your choice of each waypoint.
5. At 1140 DST the conspicuous building in Taw Bay, Bay View Hotel, comes into transit with the church tower. a) Plot the transit on the chart.
b) Is the point where the transit crosses the route a fix? Give reasons.
6. At 1205 DST the vessel is close to the red BB2 buoy off Holm Point (46° 19’.166N 5° 48’.568W). a) What is the course to steer from the BB2 buoy to a WPT 2 cables east of the Namley Bar Beacon? Use tidal Diamond A. The boat speed is 5.5 kts. b) If leeway is estimated at 10°, what course should be steered instead? c) How close to the green BB5 buoy will the boat pass? d) At about what time do you expect to be at the harbour entrance? e) When the beacon is first sighted will it be dead ahead, on the port or on the starboard bow?
7. You expect to arrive at the marina at about 1400 DST. a) Calculate the height of tide at 1400 DST. b) What is the charted depth in the approach channel and what depth of water will there be at 1400 DST? c) What is the charted depth in the yacht haven and what will the clearance be at the next LW?
