COURSE TO STEER
Use RYA Chart 3 - Use variation 6°W 1. At 1000 DST a boat has left Victoria and is 1.0 mile due south of Point Victoria Lighthouse making for the wreck in position 46°27’.10N 006°23’.20W.
a) Plot the 1000 DST position. b) Mark the wreck as a waypoint and plot the course over the ground (COG) through the waypoint. c) The tidal stream is 340°(T) at 2.0 kts. If the boat steers the course plotted at 1b will it: (i) go straight to the wreck? (ii) pass north of the wreck? (iii) pass south of the wreck?
2. a) What is the magnetic course to steer for the boat in Question 1, from the fix to the wreck if the boat speed is 6 kts?
b) About how long will it take to get to the wreck? (i) Just under an hour (ii) Just over an hour
3. At 1055 DST on Tuesday, 28th May a boat is leaving the anchorage in Stubbington Bay (46°18’.28N 006°11’.17W) heading for a waypoint 0.5 miles due west of the West Point Ledge red buoy.
a) What time is HW Victoria? Is it springs or neaps? What is the tidal stream between 1055 DST and 1155 DST? Use tidal diamond B.
b) What is the magnetic course to steer from the anchorage to the waypoint. The boat speed is 10 knts.
c) With this combination of boat speed and tidal stream, which is the greater? (i) The speed through the water (ii) The speed over the ground? Explain why this is the case. d) How far off the headland at Hill Head will the boat pass?
4. At 1431 UT on Thursday 3rd, January a boat is in position 46°23’.90N 006°22’.95W heading for Bramhope Bay.
a) Plot a waypoint between the first red and green buoys at the entrance to the creek.
b) What time is HW Victoria? Is it springs or neaps? What is the tidal stream at the vessels position between 1431 UT and 1531 UT? Use the tidal atlas in the almanac. c) What is the magnetic course to steer from the fix to the waypoint? The boat speed is 12 kts. d) The southerly wind is estimated to give 5° of leeway. What course should be steered instead? e) When the buoys are sighted will they be: (i) dead ahead? (ii) on the port bow? (iii) on the starboard bow?
f) What is the speed over the ground (SOG) of the boat? .
