Obituaries Michael Gallagher GALLAGHER, Michael

Our family is sad to announce the passing of Michael Gallagher. He was the beloved husband of Ali- son (nee Jones) for 44 years; and was the very proud father of De- nielle (Bertrand LeGriffon) and John Adam (Crystal). He adored his many grandchildren and al- ways welcomed them to his beau- tiful home on the lake. He packed a great deal of life into his 68 years. He is also terribly missed by his mother, Dolores; and his sisters, Lauren (Scott) Taylor, Liz (Dave) Newlands, and Lee (Brian) Ingram. Predeceased by his father, John. He grew up in Caledon, On- tario, and attended Mayfield Sec- ondary School. He moved to the east coast to attend Acadia Univer- sity, earning degrees in both busi- ness and computer science. He was a true entrepreneur, owning over a dozen businesses in New Brunswick. Michael’s true passion however, was the equestrian world. An exemplary volunteer, he worked tirelessly to promote the sport of riding and trained athletes at all levels. As Chef d’equipe for

Remembering September 1988

Well it is finally over, an-

other show season is done. Sep- tember 1988 was a busy month.

The 2nd Annual Heritage

Classic Championships were held on August 13, 1988 at Hum- ber College. Shirley Crane and her committee did a marvellous job. The first year 22 shows were held. This time 50 shows. Still no word from the colluded Olympic committee on allowing some Western Horse classes to com- pete. Ho Hum.

The Rags to Riches Futurity

held at Picov Downs on August 21 set a breeding record. Eight horses were competing for the

Reg met the love of his life, Margaret Tor- rance, in 1948 and they were married June 30, 1951. They settled into a house that was built on part of the farm which was sold shortly after they were married. Reg was born on February 6, 1929 to a market garden-

ing family in Aldershot across from East Plains United church. He and his five siblings were close in age and grew up to stay close over the years. He and his brother Henry took over the fam- ily business and changed the fruit market over to a garden centre adding more greenhouses. In time, with the new large corporate garden centres opening and with no room to expand, they sold the property. The family, for many years, operated a stand on the Hamilton Central market and the Centre Mall market. Reg and his brother Henry stopped attending those markets at the end of 1981. In 1982, Reg ob- tained his real estate li- cence and enjoyed a successful

career as a realtor retiring when was 72. Reg felt that if you joined an or-

The Royal Horse Show were

celebrating their 60th Annual equine event. Horses from UK, West Germany as well as USA and Canada competed for the big prizes.

The WHAO had six shows

left for the season. The show sea- son was in wind down mode, as the last competitors were weigh- ing their chances of picking up a few more points to end their rid- ing season on a high note. Of course the Annual banquet and awards was just around the cor- ner. President Greg Falsetti was very happy with the show season and was looking forward to 1989.

Marvin Garrett, Cody Sny-

der, Ted Sloane, Mark Roy, Sylvia Shirley and John Smith were all now Dodge people. The six emerged as the 1988 Champi- ons in the Copenhagen/ Dodge Pro Rodeo Tour that wound out

Peter Gravelle, president of

the Arabian Horse Association of Eastern Canada, advised The Rider that the club had a very successful year. The club had only 5 shows left. The last event was at the Royal.

Farmers and ranch owners

were warned by Agriculture Canada to keep accurate books and provide evidence of prof- itability in order to secure bank loans.

Jochen Schleese, a West

German master saddler, arrived in Canada and set up shop at the Eglinton Equestrian Centre in Cedar Valley.

Horses Unlimited of New

Brunswick held their annual show at Oromocto Pioneer Days. Bob Sisson, a qualified WHAO show judge, handled the eques- trian events.

USEMA was working on a

year long promotion, “The Year of the Horse”. In 1493 Christo- pher Columbus arrived back in America with the first horses of the Americas.

The Palomino Breeders of America held their World Cham-

ganization that you should become involved. He is a life member of the Aldershot Lions club having served in nearly all positions over the years. He was a tour guide at the Canadian Warplane Museum for 25 years, loving all the old aircraft. In 2002, he was named Burlington’s Citi- zen of the year and re- ceived the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for his years of community serv- ice. As a member of the Aldershot

community

council, he ran a yearly Historic bus tour of Aldershot, and Reg was the commentator during the tours. He enjoyed this as he could remember all the farms that were long gone. Reg loved his gar- dens and won several Rose Awards from the City of Burlington. In 2017, both Marg and Reg were jointly given the ho-

nour of being named to the Aldershot Commu- nity Honor roll. Marg and Reg loved swimming and had a back yard pool for many years. One fall Marg suggested that they take up scuba diving. They both obtained their scuba licences and en- joyed many years of div- ing in both the Caribbean and Georgian Bay. Start- ing in 1976 with a trip to Hawaii, they travelled every year after, starting with a trailer travelling Canada coast to coast. They travelled the UK, the US and Europe, and took several cruises. The family would like to thank all the medical staff at Joseph Brant Hospital who cared for dad. With special thanks to Dr. Mills, Amanda Wong and Nurse Kim. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation to The Alder- shot Lions Club or The

pionship Show in Tulsa, Okla- homa. The purse was in excess of $100,000.

My Turn The Horse industry lost an-

other Pioneer, Reg Bullock. He was chair of Quarterama. Reg formulated the Burlington Alder- shot International Horse Show. Eventually the show was paired with Horsearama, put on by The Rider. We worked out the show schedule so as to have a major cross over event in the Hamil- ton/Burlington area on the same weekend. Reg will be missed he left a

legacy that no one can fill. Can you believe that The

Rider has been promoting Dodge Rodeos since 1988 and they still don’t advertise, siting circula- tion? We go to the horses mouth. The big dailies have more circu- lation. They think that they reach the agricultural, horse and rodeo people by advertising in the al- most defunct general newspaper industry. We have also promoted Rolex, Royal Bank and others of that ilk. We need to just say a truck or watch manufacturer in future! They expect us to support them but not back to us. Carls- burg and Wisers were supporters, back before alcohol manufactur- ers were prevented from advertis- ing. Hey hot shot ad agencies, we are still here and doing well after 52 years. While I am groaning about

the BIG SHOT advertisers I saw a commercial for Kellogg’s Ce- real. They had a woman jump up and come down in a different outfit. Quite cleaver I thought. Then the BIG BOX STORE Best

is here. The club shows and rodeos are winding down and you will be putting your equip- ment and steed away for the win- ter. Please make sure you have enough food put aside for the winter. Make sure your horse stays outside to eat as much of the pasture grass a possible. It is going to be a long hard winter ac- cording to the weather gurus. Anyway, just remember to
