these people family. Do you know why? Because whenever I needed help at a horse show, my “family” was there. It’s no different this year, as elected OQHA President. I reached out to the “family” and asked for their support. My OQHA family responded by providing feed- back, sponsoring classes and attending our shows. I want to THANK YOU! You…my OQHA family made OQHA very successful year!! We can all reflect on past show sea-
Message from the President Fall is here - kids have gone back
to school, pumpkin spice is everywhere and that’s a wrap for the OQHA horse show season. This was OQHA’s first full show season since Covid. I have to admit, I spend way too much time scrolling through social media, but one post, in particular, had me thinking. You know, the one about how this person is sad the show season is done because horse-show people have become like family. That post had me thinking about previous show seasons (and yes I’m be- coming “sappy” in my old age). My first year as an OQHA member was in 1980 and I have been an OQHA member on and off ever since. That’s a lot of years of meeting
sons, the early days when shows were held as single day one-judge shows. Every Area club held its own futurity and the Breeders Futurity was three full days - it would take all day on Friday just to get through the weanling classes. Unfortunately, there are not many futu- rities left. As a small breeder myself, I would like to see classes to showcase my horse(s). But what is the answer? Slot classes? “Futurity” type classes? I have the privilege of working with a great group of people on the Executive who will be working hard to organize shows for the upcoming year. So your input is valuable! Please contact me at
shari_irwin@hotmail.com. Together, let’s make 2023 even better!! Last, but not least, I want to wish
everyone who will be showing, safe travels and success at the All-American Quarter Horse Congress. OQHA will be sending a Youth team to compete in the National Youth Activity Team Tourna- ment (NYATT) under the guidance of our Youth Advisor, Mallory McKewen. This Congress, our very own
people and yes, I too, feel like calling OQHA Queen and better known as 2022 2022 Congress Queen, Darcy Woods
Congress Queen, Darcy Woods, will pass the crown onto the next Congress Queen. Darcy has done a wonderful job as both OQHA Queen and All-American Quarter Horse Congress Queen and we thank her for being a wonderful ambas- sador for both organizations.
