The Canadian National Amateur Team Tournament

A New National Program to Support Canadian AQHA Sanctioned Shows and Amateur Exhibitors

Ottawa, April 19, 2022 — The Canadian Quarter Horse Association (CQHA), the Canadian affiliate of the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), and representative of the largest breed population within the Canadian herd, is pleased to announce the launch of the Canadian National Amateur

Team Tournament

(CNATT). This program is the first of its kind and its purpose is to nurture Canada’s quarter horse show industry as we recover from the effects of the last two years. Developed by the

CQHA’s membership com- mittee, CNATT will target the quarter horse industries largest and most lucrative population, our Canadian AQHA amateur members. CNATT will consist of ten teams of ten amateur ex- hibitors from across the country. Each team will be sponsored by a Canadian owned AQHA stallion. The exhibitors of each team will act as ambassadors by pro- moting the Canadian AQHA stallion their team is spon- sored by. Each team mem- ber will compete at Canadian AQHA sanctioned

events hosted from May 1st to December 31st, 2022. Points will be awarded based on each AQHA ama- teur, and not horse/rider combo. In an attempt to in-

crease team member partic- ipation and raise awareness for the tournament, each Canadian AQHA provincial or regional affiliate will also

be involved in hosting of a fun non-horse related activ- ity. These non-horse related activities will offer a social opportunity for team mem- bers as well as an opportu- nity for them to connection with their sponsoring stal- lion owners; all while earn- ing points for their team. “Canadian quarter

horse owners came together

through social media to sup- port each other during the pandemic, the CQHA mem- bership committee wanted to develop a program that would keep the community members invested in each other as we return to a regu- lar show season” said tour- nament chairperson Joelle Johnson of Drumheller, Al- berta. “The tournament has been welcomed with great excitement across Canada and has already attracted in- terest from a wide variety of Canadian AQHA amateurs who compete in everything for reining and halter to walk/jog and cow horse events. It is our hope that the one hundred (100) Canadian amateurs and ten (10) Cana- dian owned AQHA stallions involved in the 2022 tourna- ment will be the beginning of a new program for

Eric Lamaze Announces Retirement from Show Jumping Competition

Wellington, Florida – Canadian Olympic champion Eric Lamaze has announced, with regret and sadness, that he has officially re- tired from show jumping compe- tition.

Lamaze, who has been bat-

tling brain cancer since 2017, last competed at the CSIO5* Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ tournament in Calgary, AB, where he anchored the Canadian Show Jumping Team to victory in the $600,000 Bank of Montreal Nations’ Cup on September 11, 2021. He then took a step back from competition to focus on his health, not knowing his last competitive appearance would be on home soil at his favourite venue, Spruce Mead- ows, where he is the all-time lead- ing money winner with career

earnings exceeding $6.7 million. In February of this year,

Lamaze was appointed to the posi- tion of Technical Advisor, Jump- ing, which includes acting as chef d’equipe for the Canadian Show Jumping Team, by Equestrian Canada (EC), the national federa- tion for equestrian sport. “It’s with great sadness that I

am making this decision,” said Lamaze, 53, who is based in Wellington, FL, and Brussels, Bel- gium. “There’s a part of me that feels really upset that I’ve been battling cancer with the hope of riding again and I’m crushed that that won’t be the case. I’ve always said that I will retire under my own terms when the time is right. The situation with my health has forced
